DEARBORN – After seven months of being locked up and closed, the former Cheli’s Chili Bar building is getting closer to re-opening as a new business.

Nar Bar, a sports and cigar bar, is slated to open later this year in the old Cheli’s Chili Bar building at 21918 Michigan Avenue, on the northwest corner of Michigan and Oakwood Boulevard.

Owner Najib Rizk, who also owns Le Cigar Emporium, purchased the building in February and hopes to keep the business similar to Cheli’s, but with an added cigar lounge.

Rizk said that Nar Bar will offer guests a different experience because it will be a different environment with food and sports rather than a conversational atmosphere found at Le Cigar.

Rizk said that the interior of the restaurant will be repainted and receive new furniture, but overall there is not a lot of work needed to the building to make it operational again.

“We are just giving it a facelift,” Rizk said. “As far as the structure of the building is concerned, it’s a good building. We’re just improving a few things like colors and furniture.”

Within the last two weeks, the outside of the building, including the large mural of Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios holding the Stanley Cup on the back was painted over.

Rizk said that he has already received many comments from community members and guests at Le Cigar complimenting the changes that have taken place at Cheli’s.

“A lot of neighbors have told me that they are very impressed with how much nicer the place is due to the paining and cleaning we’ve done,” Rizk said. “They can’t wait for it to open.”

Cheli’s Chili Bar was owned by Chelios. After a 10-year run, the restaurant closed on February 20.
