Golf outing to raise funds for food pantry

TAYLOR – Openings are still available in the fifth annual golf outing to support the Fish & Loaves Community Food Pantry, which is scheduled for Saturday at Taylor Meadows Golf Club, 25360 Ecorse Road.

The golf outing provides funding for the pantry, which supplies food for needy and hungry families and individuals in Taylor, Allen Park, Dearborn Heights, Southgate, Romulus, Brownstown Township and Woodhaven.

Admission is $80 per golfer. The deadline to register for the outing is Thursday.

Check-in on Saturday begins at 7 a.m. A shotgun start is set for 8 a.m. Golfers will receive coffee and a continental breakfast, 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch at the turn, a steak dinner and two hours of bar service.

There will be prizes for the winning team, a hole-in-one contest, a longest-drive contest, a gift basket raffle and a sports silent auction.

All proceeds will go to the food pantry, whose mission is to make sure that no one goes hungry and that those in need are served with the dignity they deserve.

“If you live in one of these seven communities, why not come out and help one of your neighbors?” volunteer golf coordinator Connie Fedel said. “If you enjoy golfing, this is your opportunity to give back.”

Volunteers at the non-profit, faith-based, non-sectarian organization say the number of people in need grows every month while the cost of food also escalates, increasing expenses for the pantry. An estimated 2.1 million pounds of food is distributed annually at the pantry.

“Remember the famous quote, ’Tis better to give than receive,’” said Bryan Cragg, Fish & Loaves Board member and volunteer golf coordinator. “Here’s a chance to give to your neighbor. ‘There but for the grace of God go I.’ You’ll be having fun while you’re helping someone.”

Sponsorships also are available and donations always are accepted.
