Nominations for Dearborn Veteran of the Year due Oct. 8

DEARBORN – The Dearborn Allied War Veterans Council is accepting nominations for the 2012-13 Dearborn Veteran of the Year award through Monday.

Nomination forms are available online at and must be returned to the Department of Public Information at City Hall, 13615 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, MI, 48126 by Monday.

The award is presented each Veterans Day to the Dearborn veteran judged to have made a significant contribution to the Dearborn community, and to the interests of veterans.

The following criteria apply to all nominations:

• The nominee must be a Dearborn resident.

• Those eligible to make nominations are Dearborn residents or Dearborn veterans’ organizations.

• The nominee’s community service work and work on behalf of veterans’ organizations must have been done only on a volunteer basis.

• Nomination materials must contain proof of military service.

“The individual honored as Veteran of the Year is someone who never stops serving,” said Tom Wilson, commander of the DAWVC.  The Veteran of the Year fulfils an active role in the community, including DAWVC events on Flag Day, Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

The 2012-13 Veteran of the Year will offer remarks after the presentation of the award at the city’s Veterans Day Ceremony.  Everyone is welcome to attend the event in the City Hall Council Chambers at 11 a.m. Nov. 11.
