Heights residents medal at Senior Olympics

HEIGHTS — Twenty-four residents won 39 medals at the Wayne County Senior Olympics held Aug. 13 to 17 at several locations throughout the county.

Gary Lesnau led the way among the Heights contingent, taking home five medals, including three golds (billiards, football throw and Frisbee toss) and two silver medals (bean bag toss and bocce).

Ted Zaroff and Patricia Gruda won four medals each. Zaroff won gold in bocce, football throw and softball throw and a bronze in marksmanship while Gruda won gold in softball throw, doubles tennis and singles tennis.

Five residents went home with two medals each. Rich Gaffney was a force in the pool, winning gold in the backstroke and breaststroke. Fran Gruda won gold in doubles tennis and silver in singles tennis. Gerald Grusendorf won gold in woodwork and bronze in soccer kick. Jim McLaughlin won gold in bean bag toss and silver in billiards. John Walsh won gold in golf and bronze in closest to the pin.

Single gold medals went to Jim Attee (golf), Phil Attee (golf) Barth Bucciarelli (golf), Timothy Cronk (bean bag toss), Guy DelGiudice (golf), Lillian Gadigian (bowling), Alex Garma (golf), Zak Katchwroff (closest to the pin), Lori Moore (volleyball) and Cass Wegzyn (golf).

Silver medals went to Tom Dawson (singles tennis) and Margaret Frankowicz (bean bag toss).

Bronze medalists were Michael Hejka (bowling), Helen Perkin (golf), Catherine Raftery (bean bag toss), Marcy Voytovich (bean bag toss).

Other participants were Jeanette Blessing, Ed Gubala, Irene Gubala, Juan Melendez, Joe Schramek, Paul Stasie, Delphine Wydick and Jerry Wydick.
