DEARBORN — TechShop, a membership-based, do-it-yourself workshop and fabrication studio, was awarded the 2012 Innovator of the Year award at the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Business Recognition Awards Ceremony & Expo April 26.

The award recognizes a forward-thinking business model that breaks traditional molds. Nominations came from the community and chamber membership. Past awardees have included The Henry Ford Makers Faire, Hype Athletics and Severstal North America.

“The BRACE event combines effective networking and an expo showcasing over 35 businesses. This exposure adds great value to our members,” Chamber Board of Directors President Mike Kirk said. “Recognizing innovative and forward-thinking business models is part of business appreciation that members and the community at large have for companies like TechShop that are truly embracing innovative thinking.”

“We are thrilled to receive this award as a nod to our business model, which allows affordable access to anyone so they can build their dreams,” TechShop CEO Mark Hatch said. “We like to think that we’re creating access to the tools of the next industrial revolution and providing transformative experiences.”

TechShop and Ford executives, along with other key partners like Autodesk, local TechShop members and the Detroit area maker community, celebrated the grand opening of the newest TechShop location, serving the metropolitan Detroit area, Saturday and Sunday at 800 Republic Drive in Allen Park.
