High school gridiron competition between Dearborn’s three public prep teams will be in full tilt this coming Friday night.

That’s when the Dearborn Pioneers head south to meet their host of the evening, Edsel Ford. The game isn’t quite the equivalent of a Michigan/Michigan State collegiate contest, but west Dearborn bragging rights are always on the line whenever these two teams meet. Both squads play a spread offense and can move the ball downfield.

However, the Pioneers, having a couple of wins under their belts make them a favorite, as they continue to defend their 2010 Western Wayne Athletic Conference Blue Division football championship.

Dearborn head coach David Mifsud will be leading his orange and black gridders, from their Outer Drive campus, over to Rotunda Drive and the Thunderbird Zone Stadium. Can Edsel come up with some special scoring plays or a stout defense to stymie the visitors? Or will, the Pioneers’ offense rule the day? These are just a few questions going through the minds of the players, coaches and fans of both schools.

No matter who wins the Edsel/Dearborn clash, one thing for sure is that Fordson will be gunning for either team. The Tractors will be playing at Dearborn on Sept. 23 and entertain Edsel Ford the following week. By the time all three schools have had the opportunity to play each other, folks around these parts will know “Who’s Best?” this season.

The regular season prep schedule runs for eight weeks and now is approaching the halfway mark. How many Dearborn and Dearborn Heights teams will have a good enough record to make the state playoffs is still in question. Regardless of the playoff action, first comes the “showdown” games between Dearborn’s three prep 11’s.

With the west side rivalry about to take place, the game of the week has to be Edsel Ford vs. Dearborn, with both teams taking on Fordson at a later date. It all makes for a very interesting football triangle as each team will be playing their best to be king of the hill.
