‘Dames’ night to benefit shelter

DEARBORN – Local women of all ages can meet, mingle and have an entertaining night out during the Dames 4 Dogs event from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at Dearborn Hills Golf Course.

“We hope to see new faces and make new friends to support the animals in our care,” said Elaine Greene, executive director of the Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter, who are hosting the fundraising event aimed at women. “This
event provides a different angle, focusing on women, and we think it is a great opportunity for some creative ‘March Madness’ of our own.”

Friends Public Relations Director Sandra Boulton said the group needed to come up with something different to grab people’s attention, and though the event targets women, men are more than welcome to attend.

“I think men would get a kick out of it,” she said.

The first-time event will feature a small-scale spa with services provided by Salon West of Dearborn, as well as shopping, raffles and door prizes.

“You have to think outside the box,” Boulton said. “It’s challenging to get people to raise funds in this type of economy.”

Denise Gutenschwager will be the comedy headliner and will appear as Evelyn Smallbladder, a character she developed after taking clown classes. Organizers say she will be “delivering a routine that shares her delightful views on surviving middle age.”

Tickets for the adults-only event are $40 at the door. Price includes comedy, prizes, raffle, food, wine, beer, coffee, gourmet teas, nostalgic candy selection and a create-your-own sundae bar.

Proceeds will go to the Friends, who operate the animal shelter.

Advance tickets may be purchased online at www.DearbornAnimals.org, or at the shelter until 4 p.m. Friday.
