It’s a new year; resolve to shop locally

Small is going to be huge this year.

In 2011, keep showing your support by stopping by your favorite, local small businesses more often. It’s good for you. It’s good for your neighborhood. It’s good for small business.

Here are four good reasons to support small business as stated by the Small Business Administration:

• For every $100 spent at a local small business, $68 returns to the community.

• Small businesses employ half of all private sector employees.

• Small businesses represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms.

• For every year over the last decade, 60 to 80 percent of new jobs were generated by small businesses.

Dearborn Heights, largely a bedroom community, has more than 500 small businesses. Many of these businesses are owned by local residents who grew up in the community and continue to support the local economy.

If you want to live in a vibrant community with a stable economy, the Chamber asks that you continue to support small business as much as possible during the coming year.
