Man charged in sexual assault in bathroom

TAYLOR — A 34-year-old Detroit man has been charged with several crimes after he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in a bathroom at Meijer, 14640 Pardee.

Donald Garrett was arraigned Friday in 23rd District Court on charges of criminal sexual conduct second degree (five-year felony); criminal sexual conduct fourth degree (two-year misdemeanor); indecent exposure (one-year misdemeanor).

A woman told police that shortly before 7 a.m. Thursday, she entered the women’s bathroom and noticed that a man was leaning over the top of the stall and staring at her. She immediately exited the stall, and the man stayed still and was partially undressed, police said.

She was assaulted, but was able to fight off the attacker. As the defendant fled bathroom, the victim was right behind him yelling to store employees about what had just happened.

They gave chase while others called police. Police apprehended Garrett a short distance from the store.

He is being held on a $25,000 cash bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary examination of the evidence in 23rd District Court at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 18 before Judge William Sutherland.

Police advise using caution when using a public restroom. Upon entering, they say, quickly ascertain if anyone else is in the bathroom. If anything seems suspicious, they advise leaving immediately.

Police advise always accompanying children into the restroom, even if it means getting a baby out of a high chair at a restaurant and taking him or her into the bathroom as well.
