The service was held in honor Poland President Lech Kaczynski, the first lady and the 94 other victims of an April 10 plane crash near Katyn, Russia, where they were traveling to mark the 70th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s execution of 22,000 Polish military officers. Kowalczyk’s costume is representative of the Cieszyn region. Dearborn and Dearborn Heights Polish-Americans, including the Polish Alliance Dancers and Polanie Song and Dance Ensemble were among the participants at the service. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2007 American Community Survey, 11 percent of Dearborn residents and 17 percent of Dearborn Heights residents identify themselves as being of Polish ancestry.
