MELVINDALE – Members of the Melvindale-Northern Allen Park School District Board of Education deferred cuts in bus services at its regular meeting Monday, but did decide on several cuts to staff and teacher positions.

A motion to eliminate weekend transportation failed, contrary to some published reports. Elimination of middle and high school bus transportation was tabled pending the review of additional information, according to Laudine Gallagher, secretary to the board.

Members did decide, however to eliminate kindergarten bus aides as of Jan. 25. Other eliminated nonteaching positions included a full-time district plant engineer, a full-time high school night custodian, an Allendale Elementary School night custodian and year-round positions for a Strong Middle School night custodian and a grounds person.

An operations clerk and a counseling clerk were reduced from six to four hours each; the positions are 42 weeks per year. Three librarian positions will be eliminated Jan. 25, as will a kindergarten and a first-grade teacher position.

The full-time reading recovery teacher position at Rogers will be reduced to half time, while the other half of the staff position hours will be allocated to classroom time.

A full-time math and writing support teacher position at Allendale will be reduced to half as many hours, with half of those hours spent in the classroom. Strong will lose a seventh-grade social studies teacher, a media writing teacher and a physical education teacher; music teacher hours there will be reduced by 25 percent.

At Melvindale High School, physical education teacher hours will be reduced 44 percent, and full-time math and English teacher positions will be eliminated. All of the staff reductions will be effective Jan. 25. Other teacher and staff reductions may be forthcoming soon through early retirement offerings, officials said.
