HEIGHTS — In the annals of disappointing mom, Lincoln Park resident Jason Zacchi’s story has to rank up there with the best – or worst – of them.

The 27-year-old man was arrested last week after police say he robbed a Wendy’s restaurant that he not only used to work at, but where his mother was the manager on duty.

According to police, about 10:15 p.m. Nov. 28 Zacchi and his brother’s girlfriend, Amanda Yost, went to the restaurant, located at 5714 Telegraph, looking for some cash. Disguised by nothing more than a bandana covering the lower half of his face, he allegedly walked up to the drive-through window with a .22-caliber rifle in hand.

After sending the window attendant fleeing in terror, witnesses said Zacchi began pressing the screen of the cash register to gain access to the drawer. After a few unsuccessful attempts, he finally got the code right, but not before his mother noticed the commotion.

Sara Zacchi told police she ran to the drive-through window after hearing other employees’ screams and found who she would later discover was her son, jostling the till from the cash register. She attempted to wrestle the drawer from him, but quickly was overpowered. Witnesses said Jason fled with about $100 to a beat-up Chrysler station wagon driven by Yost, also a former store employee.

Suspicion of Jason Zacchi and Yost as the likely culprits climaxed for police when a sobbing Sara Zacchi told them she thought her son had just robbed her. Acting on information from Sara, Lincoln Park police were able to apprehend Jason Zacchi and Yost at the house they shared with Jason’s brother and Yost’s boyfriend, John Zacchi. Police said John Zachhi also was employed at the restaurant, but was fired after the incident. He has not been charged with any crimes.

Jason Zacchi and Yost both were charged with armed robbery and are being held on $100,000 and $50,000 bond, respectively.
