OAK PARK — A police pursuit of a stolen vehicle last week ended abruptly when the 15-year-old driver struck a tree and parked car, killing himself and injuring his passenger.

The driver, Desean Murrell Fant of Dearborn Heights, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Oak Park Lt. Mike Pousak, adding that Fant’s family has been notified of the death.

The passenger, a 15-year-old Oak Park boy, who was reported as a runaway two weeks ago, was transported to an area hospital for what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. Neither boy was wearing a seatbelt.

The incident began when a woman called to report her gold 1999 Saturn stolen about 11:40 p.m. Nov. 10. The women told police she had parked her car at a condominium complex near Nine Mile Road and Coolidge Highway. As she was walking away from the car, she turned around to see it pulling away with the two alleged suspects inside.

A patrolling officer spotted the car about five blocks from where it was stolen, Pousak said. After radioing for backup, the officer approached the car, only to have the driver begin leading police on the fateful chase.

“I don’t know what they were thinking,” Pousak said. “It’s truly unfortunate.”
