Firefighter Aaron Sarnovsky (left) and Sgt. Dennis Schultz stand in front of Melvindale’s 1925 American LaFrance antique fire engine. It will be on display at the open house Saturday. It was displayed at the 1925 World’s Fair in Chicago. Afterward it was purchased locally and became the first motorized fire apparatus in the Downriver area. It has been fully restored and occasionally still appears in parades.

MELVINDALE – Fire Safety Month will be recognized with a Fire Department open house at 3160 Oakwood Blvd. from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The afternoon of family fun will focus on a Halloween safety theme, organizers say. An animal balloon artist clown will entertain youngsters; the event also will feature face painting and photos.

T-shirts, food and a bake sale also will take place. Cotton candy and hot dogs will be served.
