Church ‘trunk or treat’ offers a Halloween alternative

MELVINDALE – Trunk or Treat, a Halloween parking lot alternative to door-to-door candy collection, will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 31 at Downriver Christian Community Church, 18595 Prospect.

For a $5 fee per entry, families receive a parking space from which to hand out their own treats. Several families may share a spot to hand out treats from one vehicle. Organizers say children then can trick or treat within the safe environment of the parking lot.

People are encouraged to decorate their vehicle and dress in family-friendly costumes. Past participants have chosen common decorating themes for their cars and costumes, including the 1940s and ’50s eras, Star Wars and Elvis Presley.

The church will supply hot dogs, lemonade, coffee and tea at no additional cost. Participants also may bring a picnic and a grill and have a tailgate party as part of the evening’s activities.

Later in the evening, fire pits will be prepared for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows.
