Pair finds homeless man’s body in woods

TAYLOR — A 57-year-old homeless man was found dead in the woods last Sunday some 50 yards north of Isis Coney Island, 26866 Eureka near Inkster Road.

Police believe the man, who had been living in a tent in those woods, died from exposure to last week’s extreme cold. He was found by a 38-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man who also are homeless and had lived with him in the tent for a few days beforehand.

The brother of the younger man had invited the three to stay with him during the worst of the cold weather, but the older man opted to remain in the tent.

The 38-year-old man and the woman last saw the older man Jan. 15. They returned Jan. 17 and believed the older man had gone to get kerosene for his heater. When he failed to return, they spent the night in the tent waiting for him.

The two were walking to a store last Sunday morning when they found a red gas can about 20 yards east of the trail to the tent.

When they went to investigate, they found the 57-year-old man’s body covered by 4 to 5 inches of snow. His right pant leg had been pulled up, revealing an artificial limb below his knee.
